Panthers Midget B1 Champions

The Embrun Panthers Midget B1 hockey team won the St Isidore Midget B Tournament in St Isidore over the weekend of 14 to 17 November. A well deserved Championship founded by an outstanding high tempo team game throughout the weekend.

The Embrun Panthers Midget B1 hockey team won the St Isidore Midget B Tournament in St Isidore over the weekend of 14 to 17 November.

The first two round robin games pitted the Panthers against their Pool C opponents South Stormont Selects Midget B1 and South Grenville Rangers Midget B2. In the first game the Panthers were victorious over the Selects on the back of a strong defensive game by Carson Landry, named the game MVP, and Corey Bergeron with his first hat trick of the tournament.

In the second game the Panthers defeated the Rangers 5 to 3 again based on their strong team effort and the decisive offensive play of the game’s MVP, Corey Bergeron who came away with a solid 5-point game.

Winners of the Pool C round robin, the Panthers went into the playoff round as one of the strongest tournament teams and they did not disappoint. With a tenacious forechecking game the Panthers were victorious over their quarter final opponents, the Eganville Eagles, by a strong 7 to 1 score, punctuated with another stellar 5 point ”3 goal” game by Corey Bergeron and a solid stalwart defensive game by the team Captain Vincent Baron, the game’s MVP.

The Semi-final game pitted the Embrun Panther Midget B1 team against their rivals from home, the Embrun Panther Midget B2 team. The players were motivated to play hard against their sister team rivals and the game did not disappoint.  A hard-fought victory fell to the Panthers B1 with a close score of 2 to 0 over their Panther rivals.  Again, a strong forecheck, lead by the game’s MVP Vincent Larabie cemented the win, allowing the Panthers to advance to the Midget B Finals.

In the Finals, Panther forward Corey Bergeron struck first blood against the opposing team, the Char-lan Rebels, 16 seconds into the game. The Panthers continued to play a fast paced forechecking game against the equally fast Rebels but eased out ahead with a score 3 to 1 by end of the first. The Rebels pushed back hard but fell into penalty trouble through the second and third period which allowed the Panthers to hold on for a final victory 6 to 2. The Panther’s Game MVP, goalie Simon Ghanem, had an outstanding game, holding off the relentless attempts by the Rebels to even up the score.

Although early in the season the Panther coaches agreed that the team has come together quickly as they use their speed and tenacious forecheck in a coordinated fashion to win as a team. The Panther tournament scoring leader, Alternate Captain Corey Bergeron, had a tremendous tournament, with 20 points (12 goals / 8 assists) in just 5 games, setting a very positive example for his fellow teammates to aspire to.

The Panthers Midget B1 team also want to also recognise the importance of their affiliated player call-ups who were equally instrumental to their victory: Goalie Brennan Leblanc who played between the pipes for the Panther’s first game victory; forward Jesse Martin, who played the first round robin game and quarter final game; and, forward Cedric Piche, who played the semi-final and final game. A strong effort by each of the three Bantam Panther players helped the Midget Panthers to their victory.

Back to the regular season schedule next weekend, the Panthers hope to continue with the momentum they have established throughout the St Isidore Tournament and are looking forward to a positive and fun filled season.
